The day I got control of my business

There were lots of things going right with my business the day I decided to employ a business coach , customers were happy and growing, staff were loyal and the turnover was increasing but there was still an uneasy feeling that I didn’t fully understand exactly why lots of money was flowing into the salon but not much was left after expenses were paid.

Some marketing was working but again I wasn’t sure how much I should be doing and if there was a better place to be doing it. I had heard many successful people say that they had used business coaches and I knew that the time was right for me to do the same.

I approached a couple of  industry related business coaches and one was Paul Carbis who I had heard speak at the Sydney Beauty Expo. I am a busy person and Paul appealed to me because of his very direct, no nonsense approach, which suited my lack of patience ( just ask my husband and friends). A meeting was arranged the next time that he was in town. It was an informal meeting to discuss where the business was at and what needed to be done to improve it. Paul was impressed with the way I had been keeping business records so he could identify instantly what needed to be done to improve results.

Initially we set about putting new marketing in place to attract new clients and to get existing clients to crossover into other treatments. We discovered that some of our best girls were ‘chained’ to the nail table when they should be doing anything but nails and worked on a new policies and procedures manual. A new KPI chart was drawn up and I started to feel like I was in control of the business.

Even though Paul did not live in my state he was easily accessible by phone, fax or email. I was getting the results that I was after and learning lifelong business skills. After a year of being coached by Paul, I graphed the results and found that the salon was consistently up 20% on the previous year. I had a marketing plan and I knew how the money was flowing through my business, what was profitable and what wasn’t.

With the new found confidence in my business practices, I entered the salon in the 2007 Small Business Champion Awards and not only won my state title, but went over to Sydney and won the National Title as well. I am just about to open salon number two and would recommend to any salon owner to use the services of a reputable business coach and take control of your business.
