In the Beginning: The Rise and Rise of Australia’s Beauty Industry

Whilst speaking at a recent expo in London, a British industry figure began to tell me just how vibrant and progressive the Australian beauty industry is. Now I certainly agreed, after all, I am extremely proud to represent our industry overseas and believe that in many areas we are as good as anywhere in the world. Certainly experienced Australian therapists should not feel at all over awed by their American or European counterparts. But the comment that really rocked me was that “Since records have been kept, the Australian industry has grown in size and income every year without fail. Even through wars, depressions and recessions, stock market crashes, droughts, floods or famine, the Australian industry has continued to grow.”

I am not sure what surprised me the most, the fact that the industry had continually grown or that I gathered this information from a source so far from home. So I decided to undertake some research of my own (and may I add that this was not such an easy task).

A Heartening Beauty Industry Success Story

In a world where so many people grizzle about their lot in life, it is always heartening to hear about someone good and honest and down to earth who is achieving exceptional success. I trust that this story inspires more people in the industry to strive for greater success and push to maximise their true potential.

In writing this article I am quite deliberately trying to highlight three important points:

  1. That when someone has a love of the industry, dedication to their goals and a commitment to hard work, then anything is possible.
  2. The importance of seeking expert business advice and coaching to nurture you in areas of weakness.
  3. That there are a myriad of exciting opportunities that exist for therapists in this constantly evolving industry.

This story actually starts some twenty five years ago when an enthusiastic young therapist by the name of Gay Wardle decided to open her own salon.

Mobile Beauty Therapy

In preparing for this years series of talks and training sessions around the world, I was intrigued that in several requests for my seminar topics, I was asked if I could cover the growing trend of mobile beauty therapy. For a number of years now mobile therapists have been appearing all over the United Kingdom and the trend continues to grow, especially in the major cities. Last year in America I saw a similar trend where time poor consumers were demanding beauty services in the convenience of their home or office and utilising the unrestricted booking times that inhibited them visiting a salon.

It seems that this style of beauty therapy has hit Australia with at least two Sydney therapists asking for my assistance to set up a mobile beauty business in just the last few months.
There are a number of issues to consider carefully if you are thinking about offering a mobile service, or if a mobile service is offered in the vicinity of your salon. Here are just a few of the major issues that should be thought through before embarking on such a business.

A Career in the Beauty Industry - Many Possibilities

As the beauty industry continues to grow and expand it’s boundaries into so many of the new and exciting facets of beauty and well being, so too have the opportunities available to aestheticians widened and developed into many different and challenging career paths. Traditionally a talented beauty therapist might work diligently towards becoming a salon manager or owning her own salon. Some may have ventured into the world of teaching at Colleges and beauty schools, whilst others opted for cosmetic counters at department stores.

In more recent times the cruise ships have captured the imagination of many British therapists and offered work in a very different environment to the normal salon. For a select few the product suppliers have taken experienced therapists to work as trainers and sales representatives. But for most, the career path was to stay in a salon or spa, either working for someone else or stepping out and opening their own business.
